Cloth nappies aren't scary
Many people seem to think that using cloth nappies is going to involve a lot of work and effort; are very expensive; or are far too confusing for extended family to use (including husbands!).
This page shows the costings for using disposables and cloth nappies at today's prices
Once you've got the hang of modern cloth nappies though, you'll find that they are easy, quick and simple. If they weren't, people simply wouldn't use them (or get as passionate about them!).
Disposable nappies, however, are scary. Take a look at these pages for details about their environmental impact and ingredients.
Too much work and effort? Nope.
Using cloth nappies means you will be doing an extra load of washing every day to two days. Thankfully, we don't have to boil the copper and use a wringer, so it's really a matter of pushing a few buttons.
- The nappies go from the baby's bum (poo in the loo – which you are supposed to do with disposable nappies as well, so that hasn't added any extra work!) into the nappy bucket. (30 seconds).
- Every so often you put the nappies from the bucket into the washing machine, and tell it so do a rinse cycle then a long wash cycle. (1 minute).
- You take the nappies to the line and enjoy getting some fresh air and a chance to stretch while you hang them out. (5 minutes).
- Another bout of air and you take them in. (3 minutes)
- Fold and put away (5 minutes – I like to save mine for the evening, and feel virtuous for doing the washing while watching a trashy TV show!)
- Put them away (30 seconds) and that's it! A total of 15 minutes every two days! It takes a lot longer than that to drive, park, choose, wait, pay, and drive home again when getting disposables…
